When I fell pregnant with my first child, my mum and sis took me into a major baby department store, I was 19 weeks pregnant and I had no idea what I was was going to need. Prams, pumps, so many purchases to make. I felt how most expectant mothers would feel, walking into the complete unknown.
But something I did understand very well was the textiles industry. In particular home textiles.
I walked out of the store bewildered and confused. This was an epic time in my life but their were no items to tell that story, for me.
I was hoping to find beautiful fabrics, nostalgic prints, hand sewn detail, things I could pass down to generations, just like my mother had done for me. I appreciate the detail and a true reflection in price points.
It’s easy to over-simplify, but life is messy and it’s important to me to honour the love, inspiration and drive that led to Marmalade Lion. And a lot of that is due to my mother.
Valerie Joy is my mother. She passed away very unexpectedly in 2015, in the same week that my first daughter Amber was due to be born. This became one of the most emotionally conflicting times of my life. I had now lost both my parents leaving me parentless, ironically while becoming a parent.
Marmalade Lion was a project I needed to help me focus my grief, and became my legacy for my mother. It was and still is a tribute to the creativity, talent and childhood memories Valerie had showered on me, and my sister Hayley.
More than anything i wanted to honour her, survive and prevail and Amber was my smile and Marmalade Lion was born our of sheer determination to not let my mother's hard work when raising us as a single parent, be for nothing.
I didn't like the idea of her going and that was it. I needed to move forward for my family but I want her to live on through me, my children and this brand. In my heart this is what makes sense.
Our relationship was anything but smooth, but we were incredibly close and her life lessons were strong and memorable. I believe our products have those same strengths and morals. I want Marmalade Lion to make your life easier, and I hope that when you think back on our products in years to come, they’ll bring a big smile to your face!
