Tips & Things to Keep Babies & Toddlers Calm During Long Car Rides
If you’ve ever tried to entertain a toddler for longer than 10 minutes in a confined space, then you’ll understand why long car rides can be… well, let’s just say, “challenging.” Between nappy changes, snack explosions and the mysterious ability children have to cry at the exact moment you merge onto the freeway, road trips can turn from exciting to exhausting in no time.
But don’t worry—we’ve got your back. At Marmalade Lion, we know what it’s like to want stress-free travel with kids (and a clean back seat!). With the right prep, a few clever tools, and a relaxed mindset, car rides with babies and toddlers can be more adventure and less “Are we there yet?” So, here’s our friendly, tried-and-tested guide for keeping your littlies calm, comfy and happy on the road.
Plan Smart (But Be Flexible)
Start with a basic plan—when you’ll leave, how long you’ll drive for, and where you can stop. Ideally, time your trip to line up with nap times. A dozing bub in the back seat is the holy grail of road trip success!
But remember, even the best-laid plans can go sideways when kids are involved. So, keep your schedule flexible, leave a bit of wiggle room for detours or tantrum breaks, and try to go with the flow.
Finish Feed Time & Potty Time Before You Leave
A well-fed baby or toddler is a happy one. Try to feed them right before you buckle them in. This not only helps them settle but also delays the inevitable “I’m hungryyyyy!” from the back seat.
If you're still breastfeeding, factor in extra stops for safe and comfy feeding. And don’t forget to pack extra bottles or sippy cups within reach.
Bring Comfort From Home
Familiarity is soothing for little ones, so bring along their favourite comforter, soft toy or blanket. If they associate it with bedtime or naps, even better—this might help them drift off while you clock up the kilometres.
At Marmalade Lion, we’ve got supportive pram liners and travel play mats that double beautifully for in-car use and pit stops. They’re soft, washable and a total game-changer when it comes to comfort and mess control.
Music & White Noise Magic
Create a playlist of gentle music, lullabies or even audiobooks for toddlers. Something soothing can help keep your child relaxed or nudge them toward napping.
White noise apps or machines are also fantastic, especially for newborns who sleep better with a consistent background hum. Just avoid anything too upbeat or stimulating—unless you’re okay with a car dance party at 110km/h.
Pack a “Backseat Survival Kit”
Keep this within arm’s reach (either in the front seat or with a travel buddy in the back). Fill it with:
- Snacks (non-sticky, low-mess favourites like rice crackers, bananas, or pouches)
- Wipes (always, always have wipes)
- Spare clothes and smocks (because spills, accidents, unexpected weather happen)
- Small toys or books
- Dummies, teethers, or comfort items
- Extra nappies, nappy cream, and hand sanitiser
Our Marmalade Lion wet bags are perfect for separating messy gear or surprise nappy disasters. They're waterproof, smell-proof, and stylish enough to hang on the pram later.
Rotate Toys (Don’t Hand Them All Over at Once!)
Instead of giving your little one all the toys at once, hand them out one at a time. This keeps things fresh and buys you more quiet minutes.
Soft activity books, silicone toys, and safe car-friendly items (no sharp bits or choking hazards!) are great. You can even wrap a few in tissue paper—toddlers love the thrill of “unwrapping,” and it adds a layer of distraction.
Nap Support
Make the car seat as comfortable as possible. Use a headrest cushion or a neck support (just be sure it’s safety-approved). Keep the car at a cosy temperature, dim the light with window shades, and try to eliminate sudden noises.
A Marmalade Lion car seat liner helps wick away sweat on hot days and adds plush support. Plus, if there's a nappy blowout or snack explosion mid-drive, you can just take the liner out and chuck it in the wash—no drama.
Screen Time as a Last Resort (No Judgement!)
Sometimes, a bit of screen time is your best friend. Don’t feel guilty if you need to whip out the iPad and pop on Bluey for a bit of peace. Just make sure the device is securely attached or held and not left loose in the car (safety first!).
Bonus points if you preload it with calming shows, audio books or interactive games designed for toddlers.
Stop Often (Even If You Don’t Think You Need To)
Every couple of hours, stop somewhere safe so everyone can get out, stretch, have a toilet break or just let the kids run around.
Keep a portable change mat and travel play mat handy for these stops. Ours are super durable, easy to clean and give your little one a safe space to roll, crawl or snack.
Beat the Heat
A hot car is a cranky baby’s nightmare. Use sunshades, dress your child in light layers, and avoid bulky jackets while they’re in the car seat (they’re not safe anyway). Pack extra water or milk for hydration, and keep an eye out for signs of overheating.
Our water-resistant pram liners also help keep little backs cooler in summer—they’re breathable, comfy, and a breeze to wash after a long drive.
Take Turns Watching the Kids (If You Can)
If you’re travelling with a partner or friend, take turns riding in the back seat with your toddler. Just having someone nearby can soothe your child and make the trip easier for everyone.
Sing songs, play peekaboo, or just be there when they open their eyes and realise you haven’t left them behind!
Keep Your Cool
This might be the most important tip of all. Long trips with babies and toddlers will test your patience. You’ll probably have a moment where you wonder if the drive is worth it.
Take a deep breath. Laugh when you can. Lower your expectations a bit. Remember—every parent goes through this. You’re doing a great job, and the beach/hotel/family BBQ waiting at the other end will be worth it.
